The humble hot dog is a delicious snack that is enjoyed around the world!
We certainly love finding out about the different ways that countries serve up their hot dogs. It’s fun trying out regional takes on the classic hot dog.
In one of our recent posts, we brought you delicious hot dog topping inspo from Brazil, and now we’re going to take a look at how Canadians eat their hot dogs!
What is the #1 hot dog topping in Canada?
According to data from the National Hot Dog and Sausage Dog Council, the number one hot dog topping is ketchup for Canada and mustard for the US.
They revealed that 45 percent of Canadians prefer to have ketchup on their hot dogs, whereas their neighbors in the South prefer mustard.
The Montreal Hot Dog
As is the case in the United States, different parts of Canada have different traditions regarding their hot dogs.
The Montreal Hot Dog is one of the most popular in Canada. This is a steamed hot dog, which is served in a steamed, soft bun.
Toppings (not ketchup) include:
- mustard
- coleslaw
- chopped onions
- some form of relish
The hot dog can be toasted or grilled until crisp.
Or, if it is steamed, it is called a steamé or stimé. Steamies are more popular than toasties, which tend to be more expensive.
Montreal hot dogs are definitely a street food staple in Canada. This is especially the case since the street cart ban was lifted in 2013, after being in place for 66 years!
BBQing is the way to go for Canadians
The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council also revealed that 59 percent of Canadians prefer to BBQ their hot dogs.
Only six percent preferred microwaving, and we couldn’t agree more with this!
Boiling hot dogs was the second-favorite method, with 19 percent opting for this cooking method. While it is convenient, boiling can reduce the hot dog’s flavor, so we would always grill or BBQ whenever possible.
You may not be surprised to learn that a lot of Canadians like to go for traditional toppings when they make their hot dogs. Yes, we’re talking about cheese curds and gravy.
After all, nothing says Canada like those two ingredients, right?
Maple Leaf Foods released their interesting ‘Canadian Hot Dog Etiquette’ guide
Creator of the Maple Leaf Natural Top Dog™ brand, Maple Leaf Foods, released an etiquette guide for Canadians when enjoying hot dogs. It was certainly a fun and fascinating read!
One thing they said that you should never do in Canada is to call a hot dog a sandwich.
According to the guide:
“Hot dogs are sacred in Canada, and the name stands with or without the presence of bread. But a sandwich without the bread is just – well, ingredients.”
