Do you have some hotdogs that you’ve got leftover from last night’s party?
Perhaps you cooked a few too many for a meal and now you’ve got some extras that you’re not wanting to throw out? Well, there’s always something that can be done with leftover sausages and buns!
In this guide, we’ll share a few of the best leftover hot dog recipe ideas for when you need to make use of these extra dogs.
Leftover Recipes For Sausages/Hot Dogs
Let’s start off with the sausages. These are likely to go off much quicker than the bread, so it’s good to make something from them quickly. You can freeze the dishes you make so long as you haven’t already thawed out the meat.
Hot Dog Hash
Hot Dog Hash is a perfect breakfast dish or a great meal to warm you and your loved ones up on a cold winter’s evening.
All you’ll need is a skillet to cook everything together. Ingredients are as follows:
- Leftover hot dogs
- One or two large potatoes
- A medium onion
- For toppings – cheese, salsa, and sour cream
Instructions
Prep your skillet with a bit of oil over medium-high heat. Slice the hot dogs, the potatoes and chop up the onion.
Place the potatoes and onion into a skillet and sautee for around 7-10 minutes. Add the hot dogs to warm through.
For a crusty top, pop into the oven for around 5 minutes. Put on your desired toppings and you’ve got a delicious meal ready to go. It shouldn’t take any longer than 20-25 mins to make, which includes your prep time.
Tater Tot Casserole
Tater tots on their own are the holy grail of comfort food. Why not throw in some sausages for good measure and turn it into a casserole?
For the ingredients, you’ll need:
- Frozen tater tots
- Homemade leftover chili (or pre-made)
- Leftover hot dogs
- For toppings – cheese, cheese, and more cheese
Instructions
Slice your leftover hot dogs into rounds and combine them with the chili. Spread this into a casserole/baking dish.
Top this with a layer of tater tots and grated cheese before baking in the oven for around 45 minutes at around 350°F. You should have a nice and crispy top to the casserole.
Corn Dog Bites
With leftover sausage, you can always create little corn dog bites that are great as a movie snack or for taking out in your picnic basket.
For the ingredients, you’ll need:
- Cornbread mix
- A splash or two of milk
- An egg
Instructions
Set your oven to around 400°F and line your cupcake tins with baking paper or grease them with oil or butter.
Slice the leftover hot dogs into small pieces. Put your cornbread mix, a splash of milk, and the egg into a bowl. Pour enough of the mixture into each cup to get it about halfway up. Drop the hot dog piece into the cup.
Bake for 10 minutes or until the cornbread has fully cooked!
You can serve these with any of your favorite dips. We suggest some hot chili sauce, ranch, or the good ol’ ketchup and mustard.
Hot Dog Fried Rice
Just when you thought the number of combinations was exceeded for hot dog recipes, hot dog fried rice has become another popular dish.
It’s a great option for when you’re not feeling like a big dinner or you’re looking for a quick lunch idea. Ingredients-wise, you’ll need:
- Rice
- Leftover hot dogs
- A couple of carrots
- A garlic clove
- Half an onion
- 2/3 cup of frozen peas
- One scallion
- 2 Eggs
- Soy Sauce
- Sesame Oil
- Butter
Instructions
Chop up your veggies and dice your garlic clove or put it in a garlic press.
Boil rice in a pan of water for ten minutes. Drain and allow to cook in its own steam. Cover with a lid.
Melt the butter in the pan and throw in your carrots and onion and leftover hot dogs to cook until softened. Add sesame oil and garlic to the pan and let cook for one minute before adding the rice.
Cook for a further three minutes and then push the contents to the side to add in the eggs for scrambling. Add the peas and soy sauce, stirring to combine.
Finish off with a sprinkling of scallions.
For The Bread and Buns
It’s always the case that you’ve got plenty of leftover hot dog buns going spare and nothing to do with them. Due to their shape, you can’t always make them into your favorite sandwiches unless you’re recreating a mini-baguette.
Here are a couple of options to reuse your hot dog buns for something a little different.
Garlic Bread Bites
Who doesn’t love garlic bread? Garlic bread bites are a great snack or can be a side dish to accompany one of your favorite Italian dishes.
For the garlic bread bites, you’ll want just need some butter and garlic cloves for the spread.
Use a garlic press or finely chop up your garlic and mix with the butter. Spread this onto your buns and then chop them into bite-sized chunks. Pop these with a bit of oil in the frying pan or alternatively, you can grill them in the oven.
Croutons
Croutons are a great accompaniment to top on your salads or soups. With hot dog buns, you can chop these up into small crouton sizes and drizzle in olive oil and herbs of your choice.
Pop these in the oven and bake until they’ve gone a golden brown and have a crunch to them!
